When Anna Zaoui decided to renovate her family's pied-à -terre in Manhattan—a three-bedroom apartment overlooking Central Park—she didn't have a specific style or color palette in mind. However, there was one thing she was certain about: the apartment had to be designed by Pierre Yovanovitch. "Initially, he told me he had too much on his plate in France," recalls Zaoui, co-founder of the online design gallery The Invisible Collection. "But I thought, 'It’s him or nobody.' So, I went to see him again, and eventually, he agreed."
Yovanovitch, who has become one of the most sought-after designers globally, combines subtlety and drama, elegance and irreverence in his designs. This fusion represents a modern take on French savoir vivre.
Upon visiting Zaoui’s 30th-floor aerie in a renovated condominium on the Upper West Side, Yovanovitch was immediately captivated by the breathtaking views of Central Park. However, he noticed that the existing layout didn’t fully showcase these views. His vision involved a complete redesign of the space. This included creating an enfilade by adding new doors to highlight specific windows, merging the study and dining room into a versatile multipurpose area, and darkening the foyer to make the transition into the sunlit living room even more impactful.
Yovanovitch’s design philosophy emphasizes contrasts. He describes the theme of the home as a blend of serenity and intensity. For instance, in the master bedroom, his "Papa Bear" chairs—soft, plush, and upholstered in shearling—are paired with a striking cyan-and-black psychedelic painting by Marc Quinn.
Zaoui and her husband, who split their time between London and New York due to their children’s education on the East Coast, were drawn to Yovanovitch’s ability to balance energy and calmness. "I wanted something that could match the vibrant spirit of the city while offering a peaceful retreat," she explains.
This renovation marked a turning point for Yovanovitch, too. It was his first U.S. project, leading to the establishment of an office in New York and commissions for residences across Manhattan, the Hamptons, and Los Angeles. His work extends beyond interiors; he’s also known for creating collectible furniture pieces akin to art.
The collaboration with Zaoui was transformative for both parties. "Some encounters can change your life," Yovanovitch reflects. "Because of her, my career has expanded significantly in America."
As for Zaoui, she fell in love with Yovanovitch’s whimsical "Bear" armchairs, which inspired her decision to work with him. "They were the pieces I absolutely had to have," she says. "Receiving them felt like fulfilling a dream."
Yovanovitch’s design approach brings a unique perspective to residential spaces, blending functionality with artistic expression. His work continues to inspire those seeking a harmonious blend of contrasting elements in their homes.
