How do book printers "tailor tailor" to digital printing

As we all know, it is very important for enterprises to apply new technologies and use new equipment and new software. However, through communication with some customers, we can find that they pay less attention to new technological innovations, and pay more attention to how to use some of the most advanced printing machines available.

Those with these characteristics are usually printing plants that produce various books and periodicals. Their legal persons and managers have recognized the advantages of digital printing and want to transition to this application direction, but they now have to face some challenges of printing basic materials.

Paper

The first is paper. Book offset dealers buy many different types of paper, with different weights, smoothness, colors, and printability. In short, these papers are based on practical application, or the printing factory stocks in order to meet the unique requirements of customers.

If digital printing is used to complete the job, printers will find it difficult to achieve the desired results on the new digital printing press. Not only that, they will find it difficult to find the corresponding printing paper, and the price is relatively expensive. Digital printing is suitable for all economic forms, but it is not suitable for printers. Printers must understand that digital presses require different paper.

The second factor is the chemical properties and water content of the paper surface. Electrostatic printing paper should be added with chemical salt during the manufacture, so that the paper has a charge, otherwise the toner cannot adhere to the paper. These papers have a lower water content than offset paper. Experienced digital printing companies know the importance of conditioning the paper before printing. It is common to store the paper in the workshop where the press is located for a few days before printing, which is not an ordinary operation in offset printing companies.

When we discuss how to adapt the new equipment to the environment and what adjustments need to be made, we must consider the above situation. Paper manufacturers offer a variety of offset printing paper options for different application areas, but the supply of digital printing paper is slightly inadequate.

Problems with post-press processing

When a successful book printer turned to digital printing, his original post-press equipment (folder, gluer, laminator and stapler) seemed to be available. Of course, if these tasks are done in a scattered manner, then it can be used, but our goal is to put a stack of blank paper into a complete system and finally produce a book. In this way, our existing equipment cannot be very good. It works well with the new printing press.

For example, the speed of the equipment must be adjusted to be accurate enough, so that the printing and post-press equipment can smoothly transfer work, so that the equipment is not idle. In short, the printing press must have different performance configurations or a set of additional auxiliary equipment to cooperate with it, so that the offset printing technology can be perfectly combined with digital printing. For example, when designing a continuous paper-feeding digital printing machine, we should consider collecting the folded book pages to form a book before sending the book pages to the binding device. In addition, the old equipment used for binding offset books and periodicals cannot be connected with digital printing equipment, so the production of the post-press binding factory must be adjusted in a large range, and some new and compatible equipment should be bought. Although you must first determine what equipment you have, but also know that the best solution is to use both old and new equipment.

Plan ahead

Judging from the comparison of the company's new and old equipment, it is clear that the offset printing equipment lacks the computer operation interface of the new equipment, especially the lack of the used JDF and UP3i standards that can connect the entire printing production workflow. But this is not very important for book printers who want to transition to digital printing, and it may have been just an idea a long time ago, but it does have an impact on production efficiency and cost control. Investments in new production processes need to be planned in advance, which should be part of a larger plan to enter the digital printing field.

When offset presses are the only option, post-press binding equipment suppliers must of course work with printing press manufacturers to ensure that their respective technologies are well integrated.

Today, some of those post-press binding suppliers have begun to collaborate with digital press manufacturers to produce a series of new equipment that can receive and generate electronic documents to meet the needs of different production speeds. For printing machine suppliers, a complete digital printing system needs to increase investment, but in order to connect offset printing with digital printing to obtain the most efficient and beneficial results, this investment should be part of the total investment in the transformation of the printing process.

To be honest, a better way for digital printing suppliers is to understand what new technology around us can connect to and whether it can work well. Remember the old saying: use what you have before buying new things!
