USB Controller and NAND Flash Read Write Speed Study
After over a decade in the industry, we've finally decided to publish our first Flash study. This will be an ongoing project, so be sure to check back regularly for updates. If you have any feedback or questions, feel free to leave a comment or send us an email.
Since we helped kickstart the customized USB drive market eight years ago, a lot has changed. Prices have dropped significantly, demand has grown, and technology has advanced. In fact, we now stock more drives than we sold in our early days. Over the years, we've tested numerous types of drives and always aimed to use the most reliable components. Here's what we knew then—and what we know now:
1. Most NAND Flash is manufactured by Samsung, Toshiba, Micron, Hynix, and Intel.
2. The smallest capacity currently produced by these manufacturers is 8GB. Any smaller capacities on the market are typically made using downgraded Flash.
3. Downgraded Flash comes from higher-capacity chips that had failed sectors. These bad sectors are isolated, and the chip is repurposed as the next lower capacity (e.g., an 8GB chip with failed sectors may be used as a 4GB drive).
4. The USB controller plays a crucial role in the drive’s performance. The combination of the controller and flash chip determines the overall quality.
5. In the OEM market, the most commonly used controllers are Alcor Micro, Silicon Motion (SMI), and Chipsbank.
For this study, we tested several well-known USB drives from our partners, as well as OEM models we either assemble ourselves or source from China. We evaluated these drives using different budget and technical requirements to ensure real-world relevance.
We used CrystalDiskMark to measure sequential read/write speeds with test sizes of 50MB and 1GB, and we also ran Check Flash to detect any errors.
