After over a decade in the industry, we’ve finally decided to publish our first Flash study. This will be an ongoing project, so make sure to check back regularly for updated reports. If you have any questions or would like to contribute, feel free to leave a comment or send us an email.
Since we helped kickstart the customized USB industry eight years ago, the market has evolved significantly. Prices have dropped, demand has increased, and technology has advanced. Today, we stock more drives than we sold in our early days. Over the years, we’ve tested numerous types of drives and always aimed to use the most reliable components. Here’s what we knew then—and what we know now:
- Most NAND Flash is manufactured by Samsung, Toshiba, Micron, Hynix, and Intel.
- The smallest capacity currently produced by these manufacturers is 8GB. Any smaller capacities on the market are typically made from downgraded Flash.
- Downgraded Flash comes from higher-capacity chips that had failed sectors. These bad sectors are isolated, and the chip is repurposed as the next lower capacity (e.g., an 8GB chip with some bad sectors might be used as a 4GB drive).
- The USB controller is crucial for the drive's functionality. The combination of the controller and flash chip determines the overall quality.
- In the OEM market, popular controllers include Alcor Micro, Silicon Motion (SMI), and Chipsbank.
For this study, we tested several branded USB drives from our partners, as well as OEM drives that we either assemble ourselves or source from China. We used components based on customer budgets and technical needs.
We measured sequential read/write speeds using CrystalDiskMark with test sizes of 50MB and 1GB. We also used Check Flash to test for errors.
