China's packaging industry technology needs innovation

China's packaging and packaging machinery industry currently lags about 20 years behind advanced international standards in terms of overall technical level. This gap is clearly reflected in product development, performance, quality, reliability, and after-sales service. In today’s global market, carton packaging machinery is trending toward two main directions: product polarization and high-speed specialization. The low-level and repetitive construction of packaging machinery has become a major obstacle to the upgrading of industry products. To address this issue, market regulation and stronger oversight of downstream industries are essential. For example, confectionery packaging often requires specialized formats such as pillow-shaped, profiled, or connected types. These require a series of coordinated processes on a single packaging machine, which demands higher levels of integration and efficiency. As a result, more advanced and integrated machines are needed to meet these evolving demands. It's also important to note that in terms of technology, mastering motion control is a key factor in the development of packaging machinery. Compared to foreign counterparts, China still faces significant challenges in this area, which has led to disappointment among industry professionals. Motion control technologies play a crucial role in achieving precise status control and strict speed synchronization, especially in handling, transportation, marking, palletizing, and depalletizing operations. Therefore, it's clear that motion control technology is one of the main differentiators between high-end, mid-range, and low-end packaging machinery. The lack of advanced technological support has become a major bottleneck for the growth of China’s high-end packaging industry. Currently, China's carton packaging equipment is relatively fragmented, with limited availability of fully integrated systems. Packaging machinery refers to equipment that can complete all or part of the packaging process for products. Using mechanical packaging offers numerous benefits, including increased productivity, reduced labor intensity, and better compliance with large-scale production and hygiene requirements. From this perspective, the future of packaging machinery looks promising. However, without access to high-end core technologies, China may continue to be limited to manufacturing for others rather than leading in innovation. According to data from China's packaging box trading network, domestic companies face a significant gap compared to their international competitors in terms of technology development concepts. This has resulted in insufficient research funding and R&D investment, further hindering technological upgrades. Additionally, the lack of high-tech talent is another major factor limiting the advancement of the industry. Addressing these challenges will be critical for the long-term growth and competitiveness of China’s packaging machinery sector.
