China's packaging and packaging machinery industry currently lags about 20 years behind the advanced countries in terms of overall technical level. This gap is clearly reflected in product development, performance, quality, reliability, and after-sales service. In today’s global market, carton packaging machinery is trending toward two main directions: product polarization and high-speed specialization.
The low-level and repetitive construction of packaging equipment has significantly hindered the upgrading of industry products. To overcome this, market regulation and stronger oversight of downstream industries are essential. For example, when it comes to confectionery packaging, different types such as pillow-shaped, profiled, or connected designs are required, each demanding a series of operations on the packaging machine. This calls for more integrated and efficient packaging systems, which means the need for highly integrated machines is increasing.
Moreover, it's important to note that in terms of technology, mastering the main motion control of a packaging machine is crucial. Compared to foreign counterparts, China still has a long way to go, which has been a major disappointment. Motion control technologies play a key role in packaging machinery by enabling precise positioning and strict speed synchronization, particularly in handling, transportation, marking, palletizing, and depalletizing. Therefore, motion control technology is one of the key factors that distinguish high-end, mid-range, and low-end packaging machinery. The lack of advanced technological support has become a major bottleneck in the development of China’s high-end packaging equipment.
Currently, China’s carton machinery is relatively fragmented, with few machines offering integrated functions. Packaging machinery refers to any equipment that can complete all or part of the packaging process. Using mechanical packaging offers numerous benefits, including increased productivity, reduced labor intensity, and the ability to meet large-scale production needs while maintaining hygiene standards. From this perspective, the future of the packaging machinery industry looks promising. However, without access to high-end core technologies, China may only be able to produce lower-value products and work for others.
According to the Chinese packaging box trading network, there is a clear gap between domestic companies and their international competitors in terms of product technology development concepts. This has led to insufficient research funding and R&D investment, further limiting technological upgrades. Additionally, the shortage of high-tech talent is another major factor hindering the improvement of technical capabilities in the industry. Addressing these challenges will be critical for China’s packaging machinery sector to achieve sustainable growth and compete globally.
