Family Lab: Investigating the Effect of Acid on Indigestion Pills

Test introduction:

The main component of stomach acid is hydrochloric acid. It can kill microorganisms in food, but also increase the activity of proteases helps us to digest foods with high protein content in meat and eggs. When there is too much stomach acid, symptoms such as "pore acid", "heartburn" and other symptoms will appear. Severe problems will reduce appetite, indigestion, and cause stomach ulcers and other forms of stomach problems. The drugs for treating hyperacidity in the market work by neutralizing excess acid. Through this interesting experiment to discuss what is the best choice of pills for different symptoms, but also from the biological and chemical point of view so that children have a new understanding of the human body.

Required equipment:

DrDAQ data logger; a pH sensor; hydrochloric acid; 3 indigestion tablets (eg magnesium hydroxide tablets, aluminum hydroxide tablets, sodium bicarbonate tablets); 3 100 ml beakers (disposable cups are also available). 3 ml pipette; distilled water.

Family Lab: Investigating the Effect of Acid on Indigestion Pills

Experiment setup:

• Take three beakers and number 1, 2 and 3 respectively

• Pulverize indigestion pills with a mortar.

• Take the same amount of three tablet powders respectively. The number of magnesium hydroxide tablets in the three beakers is No. 1, the aluminum hydroxide tablets are No. 2, and the sodium bicarbonate tablets are No. 3

• Add 50 ml of distilled water separately and mix with it.

• Use a pH probe to measure the pH value. Record the pH after about 1 minute (the pH is relatively stable).

• After the first ph measurement is complete, add about 20 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid after about 30 seconds.

• Observe the phenomenon and monitor the pH change.

Chemical formulas involved:

Mg(OH)2+2HCl=MgCl2+2H2O

Al(OH)3+3HCl=AlCl3+3H2O

NaHCO3+HCl=NaCl+H2O+CO2

Test questions:

• How about indigestion tablets?

• Why does pH change when acid is added?

• Which is the best indigestion pill? (The most basic one, the one with the lowest pH, or return to (close to it) in the shortest time) the one at the initial pH?).

• How can tablets be accurately measured in different sizes and dissolutions?
