Hello Doctor,

I work for a company that specializes in creating custom-stitched products for a wide range of clients. These include everything from small items like clothing to larger, more complex pieces, such as upholstered furniture. Recently, we were tasked with manufacturing a birthing couch for a maternity hospital. These are specially designed for women in labor, with specific dimensions in terms of height and width.

We need to send this item to the client safely, and while it already has some edge and leg protection, we’re looking for advice on how to fully protect the entire couch from external elements during transit. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott,

That sounds like an incredibly interesting and important project. It must have been quite a learning experience to create something so specialized. I can only imagine that this is a high-value item, so packaging it in a way that reflects its importance and ensures its safety is definitely key.

One of the best options for large, single items like this is polythene heat shrink film. It offers a professional, clean look and provides excellent protection against dust, moisture, and minor impacts. The film comes in rolls that are 2.4 meters wide and 75 meters long, which should give you plenty of material to cover the entire couch thoroughly.

Unlike pallet wrap, which can be tricky to apply on irregularly shaped items, heat shrink film is much easier to use and gives a neater finish. You’ll also need a heat source to apply the film properly—ideally a shrink gun. I recommend the Ripack gun, which is user-friendly and comes with an 8-meter cable, making it easy to maneuver around the couch without any hassle.

Make sure the product is completely dry before applying the film, and double-check that all seams and edges are well-covered. This will help ensure the couch arrives in perfect condition.

Good luck with your delivery, and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. The Packaging Doctor
