Furniture is becoming international and transforming

In 2014, China's manufacturing sector experienced a pivotal year of transformation. As a crucial segment within this industry, the furniture sector also underwent significant changes. On one hand, with the national push for energy conservation and emission reduction, the furniture industry initiated a "green revolution," prompting companies to upgrade their production processes. On the other hand, the integration of internet thinking and the rapid development of information technology forced traditional furniture businesses to restructure their management systems, marketing strategies, and production technologies. Moreover, an increasing number of furniture companies have turned to stock market financing, signaling that the competitive landscape of the furniture industry is set to evolve more rapidly in the future. From January 16th to 17th, the Asian Brand Association Classical Furniture Professional Committee and the Chinese Folk Relics Woodcarving Professional Committee held a conference in Beijing. Two sub-forums were organized during the event, focusing on the current state and future direction of China's traditional furniture industry, as well as the role of classical Chinese furniture and woodcarving culture in the broader context of cultural revival. Industry experts and scholars engaged in discussions about the challenges and transformations facing the traditional furniture sector. According to statistics, the number of mahogany furniture enterprises across the country has reached nearly 10,000, with their share in the overall furniture market steadily increasing, reflecting a positive growth trend. The output value of the traditional furniture industry has approached 100 billion yuan. Furthermore, industrial clusters have become more prominent, such as Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Xianyou in Fujian, Dongyang in Zhejiang, and Changshu in Jiangsu. In addition, large-scale mahogany cultural complexes have emerged, breaking away from the traditional “front shop and back factory” model. Examples include the Redwood Art Expo City in Taishan, Guangdong, the Redwood Expo City in Zhongshan, and the Red Pavilion in Beijing. These projects integrate tourism, commerce, appreciation, and forums, significantly expanding the depth and breadth of traditional Chinese furniture culture. Due to the scarcity of raw materials, mahogany furniture has gained substantial value. In the industry, there is a concept known as the “three great tribute woods,” which includes red rosewood, Hainan huanghuali, and yellow rosewood, with red rosewood being considered the most valuable. However, in the era of sustainable development, traditional furniture companies are no longer limited to specific types of wood, and their material choices have become more diverse. Additionally, in terms of product design, the traditional furniture industry has moved beyond simple antique styles and now emphasizes originality, aligning more closely with international design standards. Experts note that events like the annual "Golden Axe Award" competition organized by the China Furniture Association, as well as provincial-level furniture design contests, showcase traditional furniture pieces with fresh meanings and deeper cultural significance. Some mahogany furniture companies have also launched their own design competitions, such as the "New Chinese Design Competition" and the "Chinese-style Health Redwood Furniture Design Competition." These initiatives have attracted widespread public interest and participation, with award-winning designs gaining popularity among consumers.
