Furniture is becoming international and transforming

In 2014, China's manufacturing sector experienced a pivotal transformation, and the furniture industry, as a crucial component of this sector, was also undergoing significant changes. On one hand, with the national push for energy conservation and emission reduction, the furniture industry initiated a "green revolution," prompting companies to upgrade their production processes. On the other hand, the integration of internet thinking and the advancement of information technology pushed traditional furniture businesses to modernize their management, marketing, and production methods. Additionally, an increasing number of furniture companies have turned to stock market financing, signaling that the competitive landscape in the furniture industry is set to evolve rapidly. From January 16th to 17th, the Asian Brand Association Classical Furniture Professional Committee and the Chinese Folk Relics Woodcarving Professional Committee held a conference in Beijing. Two sub-forums were organized during the event, focusing on the current state and future direction of China’s traditional furniture industry, as well as the role of classical Chinese furniture and woodcarving culture within the broader context of cultural revival. Industry experts and scholars shared insights on the challenges and transformations facing the traditional furniture sector. According to statistics, the number of mahogany furniture enterprises across the country has reached nearly 10,000, and their share in the overall furniture market continues to grow, reflecting a positive trend. The output value of the traditional furniture industry has also reached nearly 100 billion yuan. Moreover, industrial clusters are becoming more prominent nationwide, including cities like Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Xianyou in Fujian, Dongyang in Zhejiang, and Changshu in Jiangsu. Some large-scale mahogany cultural complexes have emerged, breaking away from the traditional "front shop, back factory" model. Examples include the Redwood Art Expo City in Taishan, Jiangmen, the Redwood Expo City in Dayong, Zhongshan, and the Red Pavilion in Beijing. These projects combine tourism, commerce, appreciation, and forums, significantly expanding the depth and breadth of traditional Chinese furniture culture. Due to the scarcity of raw materials, mahogany furniture has gained substantial value. In the past, the industry followed the “material theory,” focusing mainly on three premium woods: rosewood, Hainan huanghuali, and sycamore. Among them, rosewood was considered the most valuable. However, with the rise of sustainable development concepts, modern furniture companies are now exploring a wider range of materials and styles. Furthermore, product design in the traditional furniture industry has evolved from merely replicating antique styles to embracing originality and aligning with global design standards. Experts noted that events like the annual “Golden Axe Award” competition by the China Furniture Association and provincial-level furniture design contests showcase innovative works with new meanings. Some mahogany furniture companies have also launched their own competitions, such as the “New Chinese Design Competition” and the “Chinese-style Health Redwood Furniture Design Competition,” which have attracted widespread public attention and participation. The winning designs have been well-received by consumers. For more detailed information about the Chinese furniture industry, please visit the official website of Xianghe Furniture City.
