During the process of floor decoration, an increasing number of homeowners are choosing cork flooring. Compared to solid wood flooring, cork offers a more comfortable feel underfoot, better anti-slip properties, and superior wear resistance along with eco-friendly performance. The natural texture and soft touch of cork make it more appealing than many other materials. However, how can you select the right cork flooring? Here are some key tips to help you make an informed decision.
**1. "Three Looks" to Evaluate Cork Flooring**
**First, Check the Origin**
Cork is a regional resource that only grows in a few countries around the western Mediterranean. While it can be cultivated elsewhere, the quality of the bark differs significantly. For example, even though cork can grow in the Qinling Mountains of China, the thickness is only about one-third of that from Portugal, typically less than five centimeters. The elasticity, color, and overall performance of the bark vary greatly, which affects comfort, sound insulation, and thermal efficiency.
**Second, Examine the Appearance**
Cork bark is graded into A, B, and C based on thickness and color purity. The price difference between grades can be as high as 50%. As a natural product, some small holes or imperfections on the surface are normal and do not affect usability. However, if the material is of poor quality, manufacturers may use putty to fill these gaps. This can lead to cracks and damage over time due to expansion and contraction.
To check the base material, look at the particle size and black spots on the back of the floor. More fine particles and black spots indicate lower quality. A whiter surface with slight natural color usually indicates a higher-grade board. Darker surfaces may suggest lower quality. Additionally, when inspecting, ensure the sanded surface is smooth, free of bumps, and the cork particles are pure. Check the edges for straightness by placing four identical planks on a flat surface and checking how well they fit together.
**Third, Inspect the MDF Base**
The MDF used in cork flooring plays a crucial role. High-quality MDF is made from poplar or cypress, without using branches or dead trees. It undergoes processes like bark peeling and washing, resulting in high-density, environmentally friendly material. You can assess density by looking at the cross-section; high-quality MDF should be white and uniform. Low-quality MDF may appear dark or have impurities, indicating poor processing.
Another important factor is the density of the MDF. Good-quality boards should have a density of at least 900 kg per cubic meter. Consumers can judge by weight—higher density means better quality. Other key indicators include formaldehyde emissions and water absorption expansion rate. To test this, break the floor instead of cutting it, so the cross-section is visible. If it's dark or has impurities, it may indicate poor processing.
**2. Smell Test**
Go to a store and get close to the surface of the cork flooring. A light, natural wood scent is a good sign of an eco-friendly product. On the other hand, a strong chemical smell suggests the use of low-quality adhesives or paints, which may be harmful to health.
**3. Feel the Comfort**
Cork contains up to 42 million tiny cells per square meter, making it highly resilient and comfortable underfoot. Its natural non-slip properties also add to its appeal.
**4. Check Edge Straightness**
Take four identical cork planks and lay them on a flat surface. If they fit together seamlessly, the edges are likely straight and well-made.
**5. Test the Bending Strength**
To test the strength of the board, fold it diagonally and check for cracks on the curved surface. If there are no cracks, the flooring is of good quality. Another method is to test the bonding strength by placing a small piece in a bubble, though this is not commonly done.
