Using Roland Color Printing Machine to Make Screen Printing Colors

Japan's Roland Hi-Fi JET PRO series of color inkjet printers, which is represented by the Graphics Division of Stone Corporation, uses a unique dual ink supply system and variable ink drop technology. It is based on the traditional yellow, magenta, cyan and black colors and added with orange and green, light blue and light colors. The use of eight-color printing can reproduce extremely wide color gamut and vivid colors and smooth and delicate. Continuous color levels. At the same time, this inkjet printer also comes with Adobe Postscript 3 compatible software, and can be compatible with some RIP developed in China, such as "Mongolian", "Tongruida", etc., with built-in ICC color description in line with the international color organization standards The file ensures that the printed colors match exactly. Therefore, it can not only be used to produce high-fidelity advertising poster pictures, but also an internationally recognized device that can meet digital proofing requirements for printing plates. At the same time, this color inkjet printer can also be used as an output device for making color separation screening films. It directly prints out dots on polyester sheets for screen-printing color separation sheets for screen printing and small offset printing. It can be said that it is a multi-purpose machine with excellent value for money.

In recent years, I have seen screen printing color separations made using laser printers and other inkjet printers many times, but most of them feel that the edge of the dot is blurry or the dot density is insufficient. The use of Roland inkjet plotter made of screens, clear edges, density of nearly 2.9, can fully meet the needs of screen printing plate. One of the benefits of applying this technology is that it can meet the needs of large-format advertising posters for segregation. Due to the fact that few laser image-setters have been introduced in the country, they have exceeded the size of the Encyclopedia, and large-format advertisement posters have mostly exceeded 1m. Therefore, in the past, when such products were made, they were often divided into small pieces, and then the work method of collage copy copying; or a small piece, and then the projection enlarged into large pieces. Roland Hi-Fi JET PRO has two models: the maximum print width of the FJ-600 is 1615mm; the maximum print width of the FJ-500 is 1361mm; and the print length exceeds 20m, which greatly exceeds the maximum size that a full-length imagesetter can produce. The second is that the process is simple, no process such as flushing and drying is needed, and printing can be used directly. The traditional photocopying process can be used after the machine needs to be washed and dried after the photosensitive film is output. If the dot density is not enough, copy it to increase the density. Third, investment and production costs are low. The use of laser phototypesetting machine to produce a 1m2 four-color color separation plus mesh, the minimum must be five or six hundred dollars; and using inkjet technology, if the use of domestic polyester film and ink, the cost is roughly 100 yuan. The biggest problem with domestic ink is that the hue is inaccurate, and the only thing that needs to be used here is the density of outlets, and it is irrelevant whether the hue is accurate or not. The price of imported laser image-setters in the entire Zhang is more than 1 million yuan, and the price of one FJ-600 is also in the range of 167,000 yuan, and no additional equipment is required. Obviously, this method has great advantages over the traditional screen printing color separation plate making process, and is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized screen printing and advertising production enterprise applications.

Recently, with the help of the Stone Graphics Department, I have explored the process of producing screen-print separations using the Roland inkjet printer. The first thing to note here is that some advertising companies are very accustomed to using PhotoShop to create large-scale advertising posters. If this product is made with inkjet printing, it will not be a problem, but it is not suitable if it is used for printing. Because the inkjet printing is done in one color at a time, there are no problems such as overprinting and ink overprinting, and printing must consider ink overprinting, color printing, dot enlargement during printing, high light and dark tone calibration, spot color pattern, and trapping. , black text overlays, vector graphics, and curve text. PhotoShop is a bitmap image, a processing tool similar to a photo. When printed, it turns everything into a screened image, which is especially not suitable for processing vector graphics. In the production of print, PhotoShop is only used to process the scanning of the picture, gradation tone, and color correction. The design of the printed matter should generally use vector graphics design software such as Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDRAW. I am using ColelDRAW to do this experiment here.

In addition, it should be noted that the color of the graphic images and characters used in printing must use the CMYK mode, and cannot use RGB. The inkjet printer can print RGB mode images directly. However, the RGB mode image and the CMYK mode image are very different in color, and the print color gamut is also larger than the CMYK print color gamut. Therefore, if an image printed using the RGB mode is placed on the CMYK four-color printing, there will be a large difference in color from the original printed image.

We first follow the prompts to install the Roland ColorChoice 4.0 (RCC4.0) driver. After installation, Roland ColorChoice's shortcut icon can be seen on the desktop of the computer. Then open CorelDRAW, create a new page; freely transfer a 120DPI CMYK mode color image (image accuracy is generally 2 times the number of output lines); draw a square box with a square drawing tool, half superimposed on the color map or Later, and select the color fill tool to select any PANTONE color in the palette to fill in; then add a few black characters on the graphic image, the color is set to 100% black in CMYK. This completes a simple pattern with both color images, spot color vector graphics and black text superimposed. Spot color patterns are often used in packaging, advertising, etc. to print logos and undertones, especially in colors that are difficult to synthesize with four colors or have strict hue requirements. Black overlay refers to the use of more than 95% of the black text lines are always superimposed on the other three colors, that is, the other three colors in the text part is not exposed, mainly to prevent black text or lines in other colors when there are deviations overprint Exposure to white background. If RGB black is selected, the black of the text line is a four-color composite, and a slight deviation in printing will feel blurred. The trapping is to slightly overlap at the interface when the two color blocks are connected, so as to prevent the white border from being exposed after the interface is overprinted. These are the operating principles that are different from the general image printing and printing in the printing design, and are also the methods for checking whether the design software and the print driver can undertake the separation of printing designs.

Open Print Preview in CorelDRAW to see the output. Click "Options" in "Print Preview"; select "Roland Hi-Fi JET PRO" printer or other RIPs you have installed in "General"; select "Print to File"; select "In Layout" Bleeding limit, the limit value is generally 3mm; select "Print Separation" in "Separations", all other options are not selected; select "Keep Paper Overprint", "Always Overprint Black" in "Trap" , "Auto-expand" three items; in the pre-press selected "Print Overprint Marker", the rest can be selected according to need; "Postscript" selected in "Postscript3", "compatible with the DSC", "internet frequency" selected " 60", font and smoothness options are all selected, JPEG compression is generally not used; "Apply ICC Profile", and "Print Vector", "Print Bitmap", "Print Text", "Gradient" are selected in "Mixed Top" The step value is "256" and the rest are not selected.

Now go back to the “Separations” column. In the box that shows the separation color, you can see the blue, magenta, yellow, and black colors and the added PANTONE color, and the different screening angles are 15, 75, 0, 45, 45 degrees. Turn off the "Print Options" and click on the "Color Separation" icon to observe each color separation image. The correct production results should be: color pictures CMYK four color separation films; and black text only on the black version, other editions including spot color version should not have white or shadow; spot color version and color version It is staggered and there should be no overlap.

The key to using Roland to print color screens is to generate monochrome print files for each color version. The specific operation is: close the "Print Preview" and select "Print"; in the "Color Separation" column, first select only "Cyan" and close other colors; click "Print"; in the "File Save" type Select "PS" or "PRN", determine the saved file name and saved location, click "Save" to generate the first file. The following and so on generate magenta, yellow, black, and spot color print files, respectively. C, M, Y, K, P, etc. can be added to the cyan, magenta, yellow, black and spot color print file names, respectively.

Close CorelDRAW and click the Roland ColorChoice icon. Open the blue-blue print file just generated, and immediately click the file name with the mouse logo key, and then click "Stop Job" to change the "Processing" status to "Abort"; then click on "Job Properties" in "Print". In the column, select “1080DPI” for “Resolution”, “Angle Screen” for “Dispersion Method”, and “Calibrate with Color” for “Three Colors”. Select “Normal” for each of the following three items; “CMYK” for “Color Module”. Open the "Coverage" option, select "SUPER" in "Print Quality", "Cyan" in "Ink", "60 Line" in "Frequency", and "105 Degrees" in "Angle". Select "Round" in the "shape", that is, circle, and select "use precise screen"; then select "magenta", and change the rest of the settings to be the same as the "blue" version, that is, select the "60 line "," "105 degrees", "Round"; "yellow" and "black" are also the same as the "blue" version. After that, you can start printing the “Blue” color separation plus mesh. In fact, the actual density of black printed by inkjet printers is not high. Raland is using a four-color synthesis method to print black, so the color separation screen has a very high print density.

The following can be used to print the “Magenta”, “Yellow”, “Black” and “Spot” color screens separately. However, it should be noted that the angles of the various color versions are not the same. Only the spot color version is overprinted with other color versions, and the angle can be the same as the black version.

Screen printing advertising posters and screens are generally 30-60 lines/inch. The ratio of the number of screens for fine images to the number of screens should be 5:1, that is, 300 screen meshes can select 60 lines of screens. The general product ratio is 3.5:1. Since the screen itself has a screen angle, it is easy to produce interference fringes with the angle of color separation and screening, so-called moire. Therefore, it is necessary to set the stretch angle of the screen at an angle of 8-12°, or increase it by 15° at the normal screen angle, in order to avoid the generation of moiré. Some companies have developed print drivers that include the option of screen printing screening angles, and the results are good. Screen printing is characterized by small dots that are easy to clog, so the high light level adjustment should be determined experimentally based on the type of screen and ink used for printing. At the same time, due to the thicker inks for screen printing, I thought that the black tone could be shorter, the ink saturation was higher, and the entire image was better.

The above experiment is actually just the most basic operation. The use of large-format color inkjet printers to make screen printing screens has many tasks that need further exploration. It also includes many features of the Roland inkjet printer itself that have not yet been developed. I further believe that it is also possible to develop direct platemaking technologies such as flexo for carton printing and polyester base for light printing on inkjet printers. In this way, a very small investment can be used to create a wide range of applications and higher economic benefits.
