Asphalt mixture must be produced using a heating device, as it cannot be created through manual or cold mixing methods. This ensures the proper bonding of asphalt with aggregate materials. 
When setting up an asphalt mixing plant, several key requirements should be met:
- The location should allow for efficient transportation of raw materials and finished products. It should be dry, well-drained, and easily accessible.
- There must be a reliable power supply, water source, and heat source to support continuous operations.
- Asphalt storage should be done in clearly labeled, sealed tanks to prevent contamination and maintain quality.
- Mineral aggregates such as crushed stone, sand, and gravel should be stored on a hard surface, separated from each other. Mineral powder must also be protected from moisture and rain.
Hot mixing is essential for producing high-quality asphalt mixtures. There are two main types of mixing machines: intermittent and continuous. Continuous mixers should have automatic feeding systems that can adjust the feed ratio based on moisture content and maintain precise control over the asphalt dosage and mixing speed. Intermittent mixers, on the other hand, should be equipped with automatic data recording devices to track critical parameters like asphalt quantity, temperature, and material proportions during each batch.
In addition to mechanical specifications, the mixing time must be optimized through trial batches to ensure complete coating of the mineral particles by the asphalt. For typical batch mixers, the mixing duration per batch should range between 30 to 50 seconds, with a minimum dry mixing time of 5 seconds. The screen mesh used in the secondary screening of hot aggregates should be selected based on the desired gradation, and its installation angle should be adjusted according to the material's flowability and the vibrator’s performance.
A well-mixed asphalt blend should be uniform, without uncoated particles, clumping, or excessive separation of coarse and fine materials. The final mixture temperature must also meet national standards to ensure proper compaction and long-term durability.
