The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has now developed a coating technology that enhances the barrier properties of PET bottles. This technology, called Oxyplele, is based on a two-layer external coating system that can be successfully applied to PET1:1 polypropylene packaging and is expected to extend the shelf life of oxygen-sensitive beverage products such as juice, tea and perfume.
Although PET bottles have relatively good gas barrier properties in all polymers and are commonly used in soft drink packaging, barrier properties are still insufficient when used in perishable food and beverage packaging. However, the CSIR stated that the Oxyplete technology works better than any other passive blocking measures currently in use. PET bottles coated with this coating are 30 times more gas-barrier than conventional PET bottles and are particularly suitable for use in perishable food packaging. (Liu Gong)
