When purchasing a 3D printer, many users face a common challenge: balancing size and budget. Larger printers tend to be more expensive, while smaller models may limit your printing capacity. To solve this issue, 3D Modular Systems (3DMS), a French 3D printer manufacturer, has introduced a fully modular 3D printer that allows you to customize your purchase based on your needs and budget. This means you can start small and expand or reduce the print size as required, offering flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
Based on this innovative concept, 3DMS has launched two models: Scalar M and Scalar XL. Both printers are not only modular but also feature advanced technology. Key components include:
- Inductive proximity sensor noise reduction bearings for quieter operation
- Industrial-grade couplers for enhanced durability
- High-precision extruders for better print quality
- Support for multiple hot ends, allowing for multi-material printing
The Scalar M is the more compact option, offering a build volume of 30 x 22 x 25 cm, while the Scalar XL provides a larger workspace at 40 x 30 x 35 cm. What makes these printers unique is their full modularity. You can easily adjust the machine size depending on your project requirements—whether you need a bigger platform for large prints or a more compact setup for limited space.
Additionally, users can customize various aspects of the printer, such as improving stability, increasing speed, or even modifying the design. 3DMS is also working on optional features like a protective enclosure for safer use around children, improved material handling systems, and foldable designs. Future updates will allow users to change the LCD display or upgrade the hot end by downloading STL files and printing the necessary parts.
To bring these innovations to market, 3DMS is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. After the campaign, they plan to release upgrade and downsizing kits to further enhance user experience.
In terms of pricing, early backers can get a Scalar M for $650, which includes an LCD screen, SD card support, a V7 semi-metallic aluminum hot end, and 1 kg of PLA filament. If you're in Paris, you can also opt for a 2-hour door-to-door installation and training session for an additional 195 euros. The Scalar XL is priced at 890 euros, with similar specs and a 2-hour on-site service included for 100 euros extra.
Both models are expected to ship in September and October of this year. With its modular design and flexible customization options, 3DMS is setting a new standard in the 3D printing industry.
