Once chosen, they spent a month in China, starting with cultural training in Beijing before moving to Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen for technical instruction.
Constantine, who studies Chinese and Asian cultures, said the trip opened his eyes to how much he had misunderstood about China. “It was like a dream come true,†he shared. Bjorn, an IT student, was particularly impressed by the innovation and energy at Huawei. “I saw how real-world technologies are developed and how companies operate on a global scale,†he said.
Experts believe that such programs help bridge the gap between European students and Chinese companies. Professor Lor Battitz from the University of Ghent praised the initiative, calling it a unique way for students to engage with China beyond tourism. He emphasized that the program gives them insight into the future of information technology and helps shape their professional paths.
Huawei’s Corporate Social Responsibility Director, Zhao Yuan, highlighted the program’s focus on providing direct exposure to cutting-edge technology and real-world operations. Students get to interact with experts, participate in experiments, and gain a firsthand look at how a global company functions. This kind of experience, she said, is invaluable.
Beyond the educational benefits, the program also strengthens trust between Huawei and local communities. As Deng Wei, director of Huawei’s Sustainable Development Committee, explained, the initiative helps reduce the digital divide while building stronger relationships with customers and governments.
