When purchasing a 3D printer, many consumers face a common dilemma: balancing size and budget. Larger printers typically come with higher price tags, while smaller models may limit your printing capabilities if you need to create bigger objects. To solve this issue, 3D Modular Systems (3DMS), a French manufacturer, has introduced a fully modular 3D printer that allows users to customize their purchase based on their budget and expand or reduce the print area as needed.
Based on this innovative concept, 3DMS launched two models: the Scalar M and the Scalar XL. These printers are not only modular but also packed with advanced features. The company has equipped them with:
- Inductive proximity sensor noise reduction bearings for quieter operation
- Industrial-grade couplers for durability
- High-precision extruders for accurate prints
- Multi-hot end support for versatile material use
The Scalar M is the more compact option, offering a build volume of 30 x 22 x 25 cm, while the Scalar XL provides a larger workspace of 40 x 30 x 35 cm. Both models are designed with full modularity in mind, allowing users to adjust the machine's dimensions easily. If you need more space for large prints, you can expand the printer. Conversely, if you want to save space, you can shrink it back down. Additionally, users can optimize performance by enhancing stability, speed, or other aspects.
3DMS is also working on optional features such as a protective enclosure for child safety, improved material handling, foldable designs, customizable LCD displays, and hot-end upgrades. Users can even download STL files to print custom parts when adding new components.
Both models are currently being funded on Kickstarter, with plans to release upgrade or downsizing kits after the campaign. The pricing for early supporters is particularly appealing. The Scalar M is available for $650, including an LCD screen, SD card support, a V7 semi-metallic aluminum hot end, and 1 kg of PLA filament. In Paris, customers can opt for an additional 195 euros to get 2 hours of installation and training from the 3DMS team. The Scalar XL costs 890 euros, with similar specs and an extra 100 euros for on-site service.
Expected to ship in September and October, these printers represent a flexible and forward-thinking approach to 3D printing. Whether you're a hobbyist or a professional, 3DMS offers a solution that grows with your needs.
