In 2015, Huawei announced a major initiative to support global talent development by selecting over 1,000 international students for its "Future Seeds" program. This social responsibility project aims to foster deeper understanding between European students and Chinese companies, with more than 400 participants coming from Europe alone.
The "Future Seeds" program is part of Huawei’s broader commitment to sustainable development and long-term community engagement. Since its launch in Thailand in 2008, the initiative has expanded to over 100 universities across 35 countries. In Europe, participation is growing, with three new countries joining this year. The program offers students an immersive experience, including cultural training, technical workshops, and interactions with Huawei executives.
For many students, the program has been life-changing. Constantine, a 29-year-old German graduate student, and Bjorn, a 20-year-old Belgian undergraduate, both described their time in China as unforgettable. They traveled to Beijing and Shenzhen for a month-long study tour, where they received professional training, visited Huawei labs, and gained insights into how one of the world’s leading tech companies operates.
Constantine shared that his perception of China changed significantly during the trip. “For most Europeans, China feels distant,†he said. “This program gave me a real chance to understand the culture and the way Chinese companies work.â€
Bjorn, who studies information technology, was particularly inspired by the hands-on learning opportunities. “I wanted to see how products are developed and how businesses run. Huawei made it possible for us to explore everything from the inside.â€
The program also emphasizes cross-cultural exchange. Students not only learn about technology but also gain exposure to the global operations of a Chinese multinational. According to Zhao Yuan, Huawei’s Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, the goal is to provide students with direct access to industry experts and real-world experiences.
“Students get to participate in experiments, attend lectures, and interact with top professionals,†Zhao explained. “This helps them see the future of the industry and consider careers in tech.â€
Experts believe that such initiatives help bridge the gap between European students and Chinese companies. With the EU facing a shortage of IT talent and high youth unemployment, programs like "Future Seeds" offer valuable opportunities for skill development and career growth.
Deng Wei, director of Huawei’s Sustainable Development Committee, emphasized the importance of the project in reducing the digital divide and building trust with local communities. “By investing in education and training, we aim to create long-term value for both our employees and the regions we operate in.â€
As more European students take part in the program, Huawei continues to strengthen its presence in the region. With 75% of its European workforce being locals, the company is increasingly seen as a responsible and forward-thinking employer.
