Modern marble locks are among the most widely used mechanical devices globally, yet few truly understand their inner workings. The concept was first patented in 1848, but its origins can be traced back to ancient Egypt around 4,000 years ago. Despite being an old technology, it remains one of the most common methods for securing doors today. These locks function using a system of springs and pins of varying lengths. Without the correct key, the lock cannot be opened. Modern keys are typically flat and cut with a zigzag pattern that aligns precisely with each pin, allowing the lock to turn smoothly.
This design has stood the test of time, remaining popular for over 150 years and expected to stay relevant for many more. However, like any mechanical system, it is not completely secure. There are individuals who see picking locks as a fun and intellectual challenge rather than a criminal activity. For them, it's a hobby—like solving a puzzle or cracking a code. Learning to open a lock without a key is often seen as a game by enthusiasts, a way to engage with the mechanics behind everyday objects.
Ceravyn (or Sara), a Finnish enthusiast, started this hobby out of boredom, but it quickly turned into a passion. She enjoys understanding how things work and what makes them function. Her approach has always been to take things apart and explore their inner mechanisms. Recently, she decided to take her curiosity a step further by designing and 3D printing a conceptual pin tumbler lock. Using a Prusa i3-style 3D printer, she created a transparent model that reveals the internal workings of the lock, making it easier for others to grasp the mechanics involved—or even practice lock-picking skills.
All parts of the model, including the plug and housing, were printed in PLA at a 10% infill and 0.2 mm layer height. For smaller components like the driver pins and key pins, the layer height was reduced to 0.1 mm to meet precision requirements. The spring was sourced from a ballpoint pen, and the model doesn’t include a key since it’s meant for practicing keyless unlocking. That said, creating a 3D-printed key isn’t out of the question if someone wants to make it functional.
Although Sara is still learning the ropes of 3D printing, she’s been interested in the technology for several years. Her first encounter with a 3D printer was at a local maker event, where she saw a Mendel 3D printer. It wasn’t until last summer, when she discovered Helsinki HackLab, that she decided to build her own printer and dive into 3D design.
Her first major 3D printing project was the marble lock, which she designed using SolidWorks. Prior to this, she had no formal training in 3D modeling or CAD. Instead, she relied on online tutorials and video guides. The entire design took about three hours to complete. While she’s happy with the result, she admits there’s still a lot to learn. But for now, this project stands as one of her most complex and rewarding creations.
